Coaching Took My Family to the Beach

Until the spring break that just passed, it had been over three years since my family had gone on vacation, just the four of us. We had been out of town with my parents and with my in-laws, but we couldn’t afford a trip on our own. With one daughter in college and the other in a private high school, money has been tight for us in recent years. Vacations were among the things we sacrificed so we could afford school for our girls.

My growing coaching business is making our financial situation better. It’s not that I coach others on health and fitness for the money – that’s way down my list of reasons why I am a coach – but the income I’m making as a coach is helping my family cover all our bills each month. On especially good months, we not only cover our bills but also have a little extra!

When spring break for 2016 was approaching, my girls absolutely begged to go somewhere, anywhere, just the four of us. I finally caved and agreed we could go – if I set the budget. After looking over our finances, I realized I did have a particularly good month in February. I had more new people to coach than usual; therefore I had a bit more coaching income than usual. I decided that the budget for the trip would be the money I made as a coach in February alone, which was a little over $500.

With a budget set and spring break less than a week away, my husband and our girls set out to find a place to stay. They decided to look in North Myrtle Beach so that we could work in a visit with my husband’s sister and her husband as we drove east. They found some great condos for under $100 a night. We settled on one that had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a great view – quite literally right on the beach. Since my husband had to work Monday of spring break and I had to be back for a race on Saturday, we only needed the condo for Tuesday evening through Friday morning. Three nights at $85 a night meant we had plenty left in our budget to cover gas and food!

Gas for the trip totaled about $100. We ate dinner at restaurants on Wednesday and Thursday for a total of $120. That left enough of my coaching money to cover about half of the grocery store trip. I don’t feel bad about going a little over budget on food because we would have purchased pretty much the same groceries if we had stayed at home! The only expenses not covered were the fast food meals eaten while traveling. Again, we would have eaten if we had stayed home (although I, for one, would likely have eaten better choices!).

My income from coaching has varied from month to month, but it has grown over time. Looking at my reports for March, I’m on track to end in the same ball park as February – somewhere around $500 for the month. What would an extra $500 do for you? I can’t guarantee anyone else will make any particular amount as a coach – I can’t even guarantee I’ll make any particular amount as a Coach! – but I can tell you that coaching has rewarded me in so many ways. This was just the first instance where the money I made as a coach clearly gave my family something we hadn’t been able to afford in a while.
